Both sides of the argument have their pros and cons, however the question still remains, should marijuana be legalized? Marijuana has been a portrayed as negative by the government and has been presented as a menace to the public. While there is much illegal trade and use currently happening, the face that it is one of the most†¦show more content†¦Ã¢â‚¬Å"Marijuana is created when the leaves and female flowers of the hemp plant are dried, and it is commonly used but not limited to use in cigarette form.† (Pope Yurgelun-Todd, 1996,  ¶. 5) When the term decriminalization is used, what is proposed is the â€Å"elimination of criminal penalties for marijuana, meaning that in most cases possession (with certain restrictions) would be treated as a civil offense and maximum charges could be a fine of a fe w hundred dollars.† (Pope Yurgelun-Todd, 1996, p. 5) Decriminalization insures no prison time or creation of a criminal record will occur if you are caught with possession. Marijuana legalization is simply the complete government authorization of the substance. (Ultius Company Blog, 2013, p. 1) Of the many issues related to the Marijuana legalization debate, Marijuana’s medical use is the most widely discussed of them all. Opponents of Medical Marijuana have and absorbent amount of arguments as to why it should not be made legal. â€Å"The American Medical Association in 2001 stated that Marijuana should remain a schedule 1 drug, primarily basing their decision on the fact that they do not believe it has any medical value and that it has â€Å"no accepted medical use† and possesses a â€Å"high potential for abuse†.
